- SYMPTOMS. Signs that may be seen prior to school age include impulsiveness,
- hyperactivity, lack of motor coordination and emotional instability. Later
- signs may include short attention span, discipline problems, constant moving
- touching and handling, easily distracted, inability to control impulses,
- reversal of letters and numbers, perceptual problems and failing in school.
- CAUSES. There is no single cause of the disorder. Some type of learning
- disorder may be experienced by an estimated 5 to 15 percent of American
- school children. If affects 5 times as many boys as girls. In some cases
- there are emotional problems and in others nervous system disorders are
- present. Some may be genetically sex-linked.
- TREATMENT. Management of any specific medical problems.
- .Help with educational difficulties. Remedial school work may be needed.
- .Participation with physicians, neurologists, psychologists, parents and
- teachers may be required for an accurate diagnosis.
